Llama Information

Woolfarm.com has been raising llamas for 11 years. Our baby llamas (called crias) are born amongst our sheep/lambs and then raised together. They share pastures and feed generously with each other, with the llamas always completely considerate of the sheep's every whim. Llamas that we have for sale at the present time are listed on a separate page. Presently, our llama herd consists of about 12 llamas, and our emphasis is focused on producing sound, correct, aesthetically pleasing llamas while devoting time for individual love and attention. We do boast of producing llamas of supreme quality and structure, and of course we always provide unlimited "after sale" support. If any of these llamas catch your eye, and you'd like to see them strolling in their own pasture to take a closer look, please don't hesitate to contact us so we can set up a time for you to visit.
Llamas are members of the camelid family. They weigh 250-400 pounds and have a normal life-span of 20-25 years. Their efficient 3-chambered stomachs allow them to browse on many types of forage, while not allowing live weed seeds to pass through in their manure. This is exciting to gardeners and plant-lovers alike since llama "beans" are virtually odorless and make an excellent fertilizer.
After an 11 1/2 month gestation, females deliver a single "cria" usually during daylight hours with little or no assistance.
Housing requirements and medical needs are minimal. Simple
fencing and a 3-sided shelter on 1 acre of good pasture will support 2-4 llamas.
Vaccinations consist of annual CD/T, the same as we give our sheep. De-worming
is done the same as our sheep flock as well.
The llamas even eat the same loose-form mineral we supply our sheep, so they are
easily kept alongside a shepherd's flock. When used as guardians, this is
especially handy, since it eliminates the necessity of keeping additional food
available, as is the case when using a guardian dog.
Llamas don't smell or make noise (aside from an occasional "hummmmmm"). Llamas are easily trained to accept a halter and lead rope, and enjoy taking leisurely strolls with you. They easily load into a vehicle, carry a pack, visit the elderly, go to parades, and can pull a cart. Llamas are increasingly used as guard animals, effectively protecting sheep flocks against coyotes and other predators. They are especially gentle around children and are an easily-managed size. Their padded feet make them sure-footed , environmentally friendly, and able to walk nearly anywhere you do. Llama wool makes a strong, warm, oil-free yarn adored by spinners, weavers and felters.
Llamas have a unique way of enriching our lives. Once you've discovered these special animals you can't imagine life without them !!!
